What I'm Buying First when Rebuilding From Scratch
and it may not be what you think....
Starting over means building a home again from the ground up.
This week I decided to focus on the kitchen. I originally thought I was going to start with the bedroom, making it a sanctuary, but that quickly changed. Every time I went to make something or use an item, I didn’t have the food or the utensils etc. and it got a bit annoying. Since I had a mattress to sleep on and 1 set of sheets, I was okay to begin my rebuilding journey with the kitchen.
There’s something grounding about having a simple, functional space where you can make your meals. When life feels uncertain, small routines like making breakfast bring stability and certainty into your life. Much needed when you have lots of life changes happening at the same time.
So instead of trying to buy everything for my apartment at once, (which I have done in the past). I am starting with the essentials. I am taking a note from one of my favourite movies Under The Tuscan Sun, and approaching my rebuild room by room. Also a method that I use in my book Simplify, to help with overwhelm.
After rebuilding as many times as I have, I have learned a few lessons along the way. My biggest thing is to move slow. I have notice if I rush I tend to buy things I don’t love or need. I have gotten use to living with less and expanding from there. If I still want it or feel I need it after a few months, then it will be purchased.
Why the Kitchen Comes First
When I thought about what would make my new place feel more like home, the kitchen kept coming to mind. It’s where daily life happens- morning coffee, simple meals, quiet evening teas.
Getting the basics in place helps me feel more settled and less like I’m living out of transition.
What I’m Starting With
These are the first items I’m focusing on:
*Slowly and intentionally stocking my pantry- with whole foods
*Slowly and intentionally stocking my fridge door with clean ingredients
*Basic Utensils- like a can opener
*Mugs
*Dish Clothes and kitchen linen
*Coffee set up for decaf coffees
I’m trying to keep it minimal and intentional. Instead of buying everything at once. I’m starting with what I’m actually using every day.
What I’m Learning From This Rebuild
Starting over has a way of showing you what really matters. I don’t need a fully stocked kitchen immediately. I just need the basics that support my daily routine.
This week is about creating stability in small ways.
Next week I’ll be sharing what I’m focusing on next as I continue to rebuild my space and my life.
